Benefits of planting rye as a cover crop

Why plant rye?  Rye is one of the hardiest grains with many benefits and low cost. It can be planted by drilling, broadcasting, or aerial methods. Rye is excellent for absorbing unused soil nitrogen and holding it until spring. Rye’s rapid growth traps snow in the winter. Rye helps to reduce soil erosion on sloping fields. It fits many crop rotations and provides plentiful organic matter.
